Got an HP Touchpad? Now speed it up

Speed up your HP Touchpad with some quick hacks

Our shiny, new, cheap HP Touchpad.

Our shiny, new, cheap HP Touchpad.

Anyone who's picked up a shiny new HP Touchpad in the last 24 hours should be pretty pleased with their purchase — for $98 it's an absolute steal for browsing the Web and other basic tablet tasks. What are you using yours for? Our chief gripe was the relatively sluggish performance, with pages, apps and other graphical elements taking too long to load.

But don't despair. If you're not keen on the idea of loading on Android, there are other options you can explore for speeding up the Touchpad. ZDNet has a great article on the basics of jailbreaking the tablet and changing a few error logging bits and pieces to greatly improve speed. We've just gone through this process and our bargain Touchpad has gone from slightly slow to super-speedy. Page animations are smooth instead of slightly jerky, and a new Web browser page loads in a second rather than five.

The next step: overclocking.

Update: We've installed a fair few tweaks and patches using Preware, and also loaded on WarthogKernel to boost the speed to 1.728GHz (from the standard 1.2GHz). This thing is flying. We think that it's best you do your own research before loading on an experimental high-speed kernel (you can do so through the ZDNet link and a bit of Googling), but here's a list of all the tweaks we've added. Read the explanation for each one in Preware before you load it:

* Preware
* Govnah
* EOM Overlord Monitoring
* Ad Blocker
* Advanced Reset Options
* Always Show Previous and Next Buttons
* Autostart Exhibition
* Faster Card Animations HYPER Version
* Hide VoiceMail Button
* Increase Touch Sensitivity And Smoothness 10
* Just Charge Button Label
* Just Charge By Default
* Launch With Folder View Minimized
* Muffle System Logging
* No video pause on minimize
* Quiet powerd Messages
* Remove Clear Bookmarks Button
* Remove Dropped Packet Logging
* Remove Tap Ripple
* Unset CFQ IO Scheduler
* Unthrottle Download Manager
* WarthogKernel (TouchPad)
