Wikipedia rolls out ratings for English-language articles

The Article Feedback Tool has been in testing since last year

The Wikimedia Foundation is in the process of adding a ratings feature to all English-language articles on Wikipedia, so that readers can evaluate their quality based on several criteria.

The feature, formally called Article Feedback Tool, has been in testing since late last year. It was last expanded in May to about 100,000 articles.

This weekend, the Wikimedia Foundation started adding it to about 370,000 articles per day, and will continue until it's available with all of the almost 3.7 million English-language articles on Wikipedia, the group said in a blog post.

People will see it on pages in a section titled "Rate this Page." The tool lets readers rate on a scale of zero to five stars how trustworthy, objective, complete and well-written they found an article to be.

The Wikimedia Foundation seeks to achieve several goals with the Article Feedback Tool beyond the obvious gathering of feedback about the perceived quality of Wikipedia articles.

For example, the organization believes that the tool can be used to spur engagement among readers, increasing the likelihood that they'll participate in other ways on the site, such as editing articles, creating a Wikipedia account or filling out surveys.

The group is also making the ratings data available for anyone interested in analyzing it.
