LG has officially announced Australian availability of the world’s first 3D smartphone, the LG Optimus 3D, which is described by the company as its "most advanced smartphone to date." The Android phone will launch exclusively through Optus in early July.

The LG Optimus 3D has a 4.3in glasses-free LCD display for 3D viewing. The screen technology uses a series of slits on the front of the LCD screen that block light so that users' left and right eyes see different images, creating a 3D effect.

The LG Optimus 3D Android phone also comes with a dual-lens camera for 3D video recording. This means you can film 3D videos using the dual-lens camera, and watch them on a 3D-capable, high-definition television. The Optimus 3D also has HDMI connectivity and DLNA for sharing 3D content.

LG has partnered with YouTube to make it easier for users to capture 3D images and video, and upload these directly to the Internet using a special 3D version of the YouTube application. The company has also struck a partnership with games developer Gameloft, which will see three full 3D games (Let’s Golf 2, Asphalt 6 and N.O.V.A) pre-installed on Australian models of the Optimus 3D, while a further seven titles can be downloaded for free.

"Backed by a combination of superb performance and a complete 3D experience, we're excited about the prospects of the LG Optimus 3D taking the smartphone to a much higher level," said Nathan Dunn, general manager of LG mobile communications Australia. "We've incorporated every feature for the power user and we think they'll be pleased with what they see."

Brad Reed, senior category marketing manager of LG Australia also stressed that the Optimus 3D is also aiming at expanding the ecosystem of 3D content. "The Optimus 3D is far more powerful than just 3D viewing. We are pushing the concept of capturing, viewing and sharing content in 3D".

The LG Optimus 3D is powered by a 1GHz OMAP4 dual-core processor, has 512MB of RAM and comes with 8GB of internal memory along with a microSD card slot for extra storage. LG says the smartphone has a "tri-dual" configuration — along with a dual-core processor, the Optimus 3D has dual-memory and dual data channels.

The LG Optimus 3D runs the 2.2 Froyo version version of Google's Android operating system, but LG has stated the phone will soon be upgradeable to the latest 2.3 Gingerbread version "in due course".

The Optimus 3D follows the launch of the original LG Optimus, the LG Optimus One, and the LG Optimus 2X; the latter being the first smartphone to run a dual-core processor. In a busy year, LG also recently launched the Optimus Black Android phone in Australia.

Optus will sell the LG Optimus 3D for $0 on its $59 cap plan over 24 months. The plan includes $750 worth of calls, unlimited SMS, 2GB of data and unlimited access to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, eBay and Foursquare within Australia. The LG Optimus 3D will be exclusive for Optus for at least four weeks, but LG says that period is likely to extend.
