Motorola's Xoom Android tablet will hit Australia next month through Telstra

Telstra has confirmed it will sell the Motorola Xoom Android tablet in Australia from next month following weeks of rumours.

Read our detailed Motorola Xoom preview and check out our guide to the best upcoming tablets in 2011.

The Motorola Xoom is equipped with a 10.1in touchscreen and runs the latest version of Google's Android software: 3.0 or 'Honeycomb', which has specifically been designed for tablet devices. Key features of Android 3.0 Honeycomb include tabbed Web browsing, support for 3D graphics, added enterprise features like encrypted storage, a redesigned keyboard, and completely redesigned interface that aims to take advantage of the larger tablet screen. It also supports Adobe Flash Player, making it ideal for viewing Web video.

The Motorola Xoom is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, has 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory and also has two digital cameras on board: a front-facing 2-megapixel camera that acts as a webcam for video calling, and a 5-megapixel camera on the rear that takes still photos and records 720p high-definition video.

"Motorola Xoom arrives at a time when Australians are embracing both mobile tablets and devices powered by Android in record numbers," said Warwick Bray, executive director of Telstra mobility products. "Motorola Xoom's high-definition touch screen and powerful operating software will make it possible for more Australians to enjoy video, mobile web browsing, gaming and magazines on the go."

Local Android blog Ausdroid was the first to reveal earlier this month that Telstra was set to be launching the Xoom in Australia, and weeks of rumours followed.

The launch of the Motorola Xoom through Telstra comes as a number of tablet devices are set to hit the Australian market alongside the iPad 2. Vodafone will exclusively launch a larger version of the Galaxy Tab — the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v — on May 4, while RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, described by the company as the world's first "professional grade" tablet will also be available in the coming months.

The Motorola Xoom announcement also comes just days after Telstra slashed the price of the original Samsung Galaxy Tab Android tablet from $899 to just $299.

Pricing and launch details have yet to be announced by either Telstra or Motorola, but details are expected to be revealed at a Motorola media launch on 5 May.

I need power and lots of it. As a Front End Web developer anything less just won’t cut it which is why the MSI GT75 is an outstanding laptop for me. It’s a sleek and futuristic looking, high quality, beast that has a touch of sci-fi flare about it.

If you can afford the price tag, it is well worth the money. It out performs any other laptop I have tried for gaming, and the transportable design and incredible display also make it ideal for work.
