Telstra revamps mobile phone plans

Freedom Connect plans include unlimited SMS messages to any Australian mobile on all cap plans $59 per month and above

Telstra will introduce unlimited text messages on a selection of its new 'Freedom Connect' mobile phone cap plans, available from 29 March.

Current Telstra cap plans will cease to be available after March 28, when they will be replaced by the new plans called 'Freedom Connect'. The Freedom Connect plans will include unlimited SMS messages to any Australian mobile on all cap plans $59 per month and above. The plans are identical to the ones revealed by Gizmodo earlier this week that correctly quoted a "source within Telstra".

A total of five Freedom Connect plans will be offered by Australia's largest telco — the cheapest plan will start at $49 per month for $450 worth of calls and text and 1GB of included data. All other plans will include unlimited texts, and are as follows:

$59 for $550 worth of calls and 1.5GB data
$79 for $800 worth of calls, unlimited MessageBank and 2GB data
$99 for $1200 worth of calls, unlimited MessageBank and 2.5GB data
$129 for unlimited calls, unlimited MessageBank and 3GB data

Telstra says the Freedom Connect Plans encourage customers to pay bills electronically and receive their bill online or by e-mail — the telco will apply a $2 for alternate billing and payment options. Existing Telstra customers who don't want to take up the new plans with this fee can stay on their existing plan.

"Customers wanted more certainty and that's what these mobile plans offer with generous calling value, unlimited text on the $59+ plans, a great 2.5GB data inclusion on the $99 plan and unlimited MessageBank use on the $79+ plans," said Gerd Schenkel, executive director of Telstra digital. "We're continuing to offer the most popular price points of Telstra's Next G Cap Plans for the new Freedom Connect Plans but they feature extra call inclusions, a larger data allowance on the $99 plan and a new $59 plan with generous call and data value and unlimited SMS."

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
