AMD hires former HP executive as CIO

AMD's new CIO, Mike Wolfe, will be responsible for AMD's global technology infrastructure

AMD on Monday continued shuffling its senior executive ranks, appointing former Hewlett-Packard executive Mike Wolfe as its chief information officer.

Wolfe will be responsible for managing AMD's global technology infrastructure, the company said in a statement. He will report to Thomas Seifert, who is the interim CEO and chief financial officer.

Wolfe for the past five years was the vice president of IT for product development and engineering at HP, AMD said. He also previously worked at Motorola and Freescale Semiconductor.

"[Wolfe's] considerable talent and experience will help AMD to continue strengthening our IT infrastructure and streamline our business based on our own products and platforms," said Seifert in a statement

The move amounts to a bit of an executive swap between the two companies. In August 2009, HP made former AMD CIO Ahmed Mahmoud its senior vice president in global information technology.

AMD has been reshuffling its executive staff over the past few months as it tries to revitalize operations to effectively compete with Intel in the server and PC markets. The company is looking for a new CEO after the resignation of former CEO Dirk Meyer in January. In February, two senior executives, Bob Rivet, executive vice president and chief operations and administrative officer, and Marty Seyer, senior vice president of corporate strategy, also resigned from the company.

AMD has been losing processor market share to Intel in both the PC and server space. Intel had an 80.8 per cent processor market share during the fourth quarter last year, compared to 80.5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to an IDC study released in February. AMD's market share during the quarter was 18.9 per cent, declining from a 19.5 per cent share the previous year.

It’s perfect for mobile workers. Just take it out — it’s small enough to sit anywhere — turn it on, load a sheet of paper, and start printing.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
