An Australian Government Classification Board document released to GamePron reveals that the next instalment of the popular fighting game series Mortal Kombat will not be available to purchase in Australia due to the lack of a mature rating for video games.
The fighting game has been refused classification, with the Classification Board document citing content that was unsuitable for minors. The report also explicitly cites ten particularly gruesome 'fatalities' able to be performed in-game as a partial reasoning behind the game's ban.
GamePron also spoke to the game's distributor Warner Bros, quoting a spokesperson who was "extremely disappointed" with the decision to restrict the game. The Warner Bros spokesperson mentioned that with an R18+ classification in Australia, the game would have been able to be purchased by mature gamers.
The game was set to be released on the Microsoft Xbox 360, which is locked to playing games specific to the Australian region, and the Sony Playstation 3, which is able to play games imported from overseas.
