The Apple iPhone 5 is rumoured to have a larger 4in display

Apple's iPhone 5 is still months away from becoming a reality, but that hasn't stopped the rumour mill going into overdrive. Just what does Apple have up its sleeve to entice consumers in 2011?

Read our comprehensive iPhone 4 review and check out our guide to the best upcoming smartphones in 2011.

According to DigiTimes, the iPhone 5 will feature a larger 4in screen; bigger than the standard 3.5in display of the current iPhone and more in line with Google Android phones such as the 4.3in HTC Desire HD, and the 4in Samsung Galaxy S and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.

The report also claims the iPhone 5 may not be any larger than the current iPhone 5, as the display could extend from edge-to-edge. The iPhone 5 screen is likely to be similar to the current iPhone 4's retina display, which uses IPS technology and has a 640x960 pixel resolution.

Other rumours about the next-generation iPhone have included:

— A smaller, cheaper, downsized version of the iPhone (Unlikely)
— A screen that is closer to the edges of the phone, reducing the size of the iPhone (Possible)
— Inclusion of a Near Field Communication (NFC) chip (Likely)
— The introduction of the iPhone 5 in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco (Highly likely)
— A new A4 processor that could boast a dual-PowerVR SGX 543 graphics and video core (Possible)
— An antenna that will work on both GSM and CDMA networks to accommodate AT&T and Verizon's networks in the US (Possible)
— Thinner case design than the current iPad (Possible)
— No home button; use of multi-touch gestures instead (Unlikely)
— Increased battery life (Highly likely)
