The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet — officially unveiled today at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona, Spain — is the successor to the original 7in Samsung Galaxy Tab. Unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a 10.1in display, making it a similar size to the Apple iPad and the rumoured iPad 2.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet features a rear 8-megapixel rear camera that doubles as a 1080p HD video recorder, and a 2-megapixel front camera for video calls. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, has 1GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of internal memory.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is one of the first tablet devices announced for Australia that will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb, a version of Google's mobile operating system that has specifically been designed for tablet devices. Key features of Android 3.0 Honeycomb include tabbed Web browsing, support for 3D graphics, added enterprise features like encrypted storage, a redesigned keyboard, and completely redesigned interface that aims to take advantage of the larger tablet screen.

Vodafone has recently been dealing with widely reported network issues in Australia, including dropouts, call delays and blackspots. A Samsung Australia spokesperson acknowledged the telco's recent issues, but said it did not have any pressing concerns.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will launch in Australia in "early Q2", so expect to see it around April at the earliest. The Galaxy Tab 10.1's Vodafone-exclusive deal does not extend to the other Galaxy branded device Samsung unveiled today; the Samsung Galaxy S II Android phone. The new smartphone, a successor to the original Samsung Galaxy S will be sold through all Australian carriers; Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.
