Nokia Bubbles adds shortcuts to unlock screen

The application allows users to access unread messages from the unlock screen

Nokia Beta Labs has released Bubbles, an application that adds shortcuts in the shape of floating bubbles on a new unlock screen, inventor Pauli Asikainen said in a blog post on Friday.

The bubbles appear when the user presses the hardware "apps" key while their smartphone is in sleep mode. Every bubble represents a corresponding action, including viewing any unread messages, missed calls, controlling the music player or sending a message to a friend.

The user just has to grab a bubble and drag it to one of the available drop points to initiate the action. The drop points only become visible when the user grabs one of the action bubbles. For example, the two latest unread messages have their own drop points. If there are more than two unread messages the third drop point sends the user to the inbox. The are also drop points for play or pause on the music player or playing the next or previous song.

Bubbles is available for the Symbian 3-based N8, C6-01 and C7. The application can be downloaded from Nokia's Beta Labs' website. The application is still in the experimental prototype stage, and Nokia hasn't decided if it will become a real product.
