Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc smartphone (preview)

Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc comes packed with Android 2.3 and some rather powerful looking specs

The slew of Android powerhouse phones is just beginning with the unveiling of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. The first of many Xperia-branded phones to debut in 2011, the Arc sports a new display technology called the Mobile Bravia Engine. The Xperia phones have been slightly disappointing in the past due to their sluggish performance, but the Arc's specs and design make me anxious to get my hands on it.

Like the other Xperia phones, the Arc looks beautifully designed. It is also exceptionally thin (just 8.7mm at the thinnest part of its body). The 4.3in display is designed for entertainment-hence the shared name to the company's line of HDTVs.

And yes, the Arc runs the latest version of Android, Gingerbread (2.3). I knocked the Xperia X10 when it launched as it was running the dated (and slow) Android 1.6 so I was happy to hear this news. The Arc is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor so it should be a pretty speedy phone.

The Xperia also has an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.4 lens which enables the capture of high quality pictures and HD videos even in low light. The Arc also has an HDMI connector so you can view photos or video on your HDTV.

The Arc will be available globally in selected markets, including Japan, in Q1 and will come in Midnight Blue and Misty Silver colours. Pricing has not yet been announced.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
