Dell Streak vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab: Tablet showdown

Which of the newest iPad challengers -- the Dell Streak or the Samsung Galaxy Tab -- is the better tablet?

While Apple has opted for an IPS screen in its iPad, both the Dell Streak and the Samsung Galaxy Tab utilise standard, capacitive TFT touchscreens. The larger 7in screen of the Galaxy Tab makes Web browsing and viewing multimedia far more pleasant experiences than on the Streak, but both displays are good at rendering crisp, clear text. Unfortunately, both displays are hard to see in direct sunlight.

With a 5in display, the Dell Streak is more pocketable and easier to carry around than the Galaxy Tab, though both of these tablet devices are very comfortable for travelling. We prefer the larger screen of the Galaxy Tab — the Dell Streak's 5in screen isn't much larger than the 4.3in screen of the HTC Desire HD smartphone, so it can easily pass as a smartphone on steroids rather than a tablet. Unlike a smartphone though, you would be hard pressed squeezing the Streak into the pocket of skinny leg jeans, and it is uncomfortable in normal pants when walking up stairs.

Dell Streak vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab

The larger 7in screen of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is designed to make web browsing and multimedia a far more pleasant experience.

Both the Dell Streak and the Samsung Tab are far more flexible than the iPad thanks to Google's Android operating system. A great example of this is the fact that you can transfer files by dragging and dropping them from your PC (without the need for any software). The Android Market offers a wealth of applications that can enhance the overall user experience of each device, particularly when it comes to multimedia playback.

The trade-off of a more flexible software platform is that neither device is as slick or smooth as the iPad to operate. Both devices also have to deal with app compatibility; the larger screen and therefore higher resolution of both the Streak and the Galaxy Tab means that many applications in the Android Market won't use the full extent of the screen real estate, as Android has not been designed with tablets in mind. Furthermore, the Dell Streak is running on older Android software (1.6), with many features like Flash support, built-in wireless tethering, and the ability to store supported third-party apps on a microSD card not available.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
