Quest buys data protection vendor BakBone

BakBone had struggled financially of late

Quest Software announced Tuesday that it is buying data-protection vendor BakBone for $US55 million, adding to its own portfolio of similar wares. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of next year.

BakBone's lineup includes real-time data protection, deduplication and replication, as well as tape and disk-based recovery and backup products. The company's platform is geared for heterogenous environments, according to its website.

It will join Quest's range of data protection products targeted for specific technologies, such as LiteSpeed for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases, as well as its vRanger backup and recovery software.

The companies' products have "minimal overlap," Quest CEO Doug Garn said in a statement.

BakBone reported a net loss of $3,000 in the quarter ended June 30 on revenue of $14 million, which was down $2.6 million compared to the same quarter last year.

In May, BakBone closed its ColdSpark division, which sold e-mail infrastructure products.
