Telstra boosts pre-paid broadband plans

Almost all plans get more data and longer expiry dates, but not the cheapest.

Telstra has raised data caps and increased expiry periods for its pre-paid mobile broadband plans. According to the telco, the move comes on the back of rising consumption of wireless broadband.

According to Telstra, $20, $30, $50 and $150 recharges will all be affected. The data increases range from 25MB on the cheapest plan to 6GB on the most expensive.

“The four revised allowances will offer customers data increases ranging from around 12 per cent to 150 per cent,” Telstra said in a statement.

But not all changes are positive. Users of the cheapest $20 plan previously had 30 days to use the data before it expired – this has been dropped to 21 days.

Telstra said the plan changes were timed to match the launch of its new pre-paid mobile broadband modem and Wi-Fi system on October 26.

“Telstra’s Elite Pre-Paid modem is the fastest 3G Pre-Paid mobile broadband modem in Australia,” Telstra consumer executive director, Rebekah O’Flaherty, said in a statement. “Our new mobile Wi-Fi option shares a Next GTM network connection with up to five devices simultaneously.”

The move comes after surprising Internet usage data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics that showed the amount being downloaded over wireless broadband was falling despite an increase in the number of users.

Changes to the plan include:

  • $20 recharge data allowances have been raised from 225MB to 250MB. Data expiry has dropped from 30 days to 21 days.
  • $30 recharge data allowances have been raised from 400MB to 700MB.
  • $40 recharges unchanged.
  • $50 recharge data allowances have been raised from 2GB to 3GB.
  • $80 recharges have the same data allowances, but data expiry has been raised from 30 to 60 days.
  • $100 recharges have the same data allowances, but data expiry has been raised from 30 to 90 days.
  • $150 recharge data allowances have been raised from 4GB to 10GB. Data expiry has been raised from 180 days to 365 days.
