Samsung Electronics became the second mobile phone maker after rival LG Electronics to leak a new Windows Phone 7 smartphone, the Omia 7, model GT-I8700.

Handset makers around the world have lined up behind Microsoft to launch handsets for the new smartphone OS, which marks a strategic departure from the company's old Windows Mobile OS, by adding more functions for consumers such as gaming and music.

The Samsung Omnia 7 comes with a big 4-inch AMOLED touchscreen as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor for computing and a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash. The handset can take high definition 720p video.

The device weighs 138 grams and has 8GB of storage capacity.

Samsung put the 800 by 480 high-resolution AMOLED screen on the Omnia 7 so users could take advantage of Xbox Live games, videos and other multimedia features on the handset, the company said in a news release.

The company did not say how much the handset would cost nor where it will be available.

Smartphone makers were supposed to wait until an official Microsoft news conference before releasing details of their new handsets.

The news conference is scheduled to take place Monday morning in New York. The event is being held jointly with AT&T, Microsoft's U.S. launch partner.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
