Internode transfers Telstra numbers to NodePhone

ISP says that the option will see more customers moving to naked broadband

Australian Broadband provider Internode this week launched a service that allows customers to keep their existing phone number when migrating to Naked ADSL2+ broadband plans.

The new porting service is called 'Local Number Portability' and is only available for customers who want to sign up for Internode's VoIP service, NodePhone. You also need to have an existing Telstra analog telephone service and pay an additional fee of $29.95.

Internode says only the metro areas of Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney will be serviced for the time being but the ISP already has plans to extend the service to business customers and customers of other phone service providers.

"Being able to keep their existing phone number overcomes a barrier to people adopting Naked ADSL2+," said Internode product manager Phil Dempster.

Dempster also predicted that many National Broadband Network customers would ditch their telephone line rental. "We also think it will appeal to NBN customers who are so happy with their fibre-based broadband service that they decide to get rid of the monthly cost of renting a separate telephone line."

Dempster stated that customers would need to have the right equipment to use the NodePhone service. "This can be one of our VoIP-capable routers, a standard router with a Siemens Gigaset handset or the customer's own NodePhone-supported VoIP hardware."
