Samsung to unveil WiMax 2 trial system in Japan

Samsung partner UQ Communications built the network

Samsung Electronics plans to reveal its latest Mobile WiMax wireless broadband technology at the CEATEC Japan 2010 electronics show this week in Tokyo.

The company has partnered with UQ Communications to build a WiMax 2 network based on the IEEE 802.16m standard, with a wireless network speed of 330M bps (bits per second). The two will demonstrate simultaneous transmission of 16 full-HD videos using the WiMax 2 trial system.

WiMax 2 is more efficient and faster system than the first generation of WiMax, Samsung said. That technology operates at speeds up to 40M bps.

The WiMax 2 trial system uses Samsung Mobile WiMax base stations already deployed globally by major Mobile WiMax operators, the company said.

Companies can upgrade current Samsung Mobile WiMax base stations to WiMax 2 with new channel cards or system software. There's also a benefit to subscribers since they won't have to make upgrades to connect to the new systems, according to Samsung.

The first commercially available WiMax 2 products from Samsung will be out at the end of 2011.

Samsung said WiMax 2 standards are expected to be finalized by November of this year. The company worked with UQ Communications to show that it's leading the charge to rapid commercialization of the wireless broadband technology.
