The NPD has released the results of a recent study, revealing that 20 percent of the respondents had played a social network-based game at least once during the prior three months. Read on for more results of the study.
The study -- which featured data extrapolated from survey of pre-identified social network gamers as well as a nationally representative sample of social gamers -- indicated that one-fifth of U.S. residents over six years old (a stat that equates to 56.8 million people) has played a game on a social network over the past three months. The gender gap among the gamers was very small, as the group was split at 47 percent male and 53 percent female.
In addition to determining the size of the social gaming pool and the makeup of its members, a few additional statistics were presented to provide perspective of the audience within the gaming industry at large. 35 percent of the group that plays social games replied that they hadn't played any other form of video games before finding one on a social network. Only ten percent of social gamers reported spending money on the games they played, though 11 percent expect to make a future purchase. However, the financial impact of this form of gaming is impacting other areas, as the social network gamers have reported spending 20 less on gaming in general since beginning to play social network games.
