Online fraud claims one in 10 Australians: VeriSign

Over a billion dollars lost during the past 12 months

VeriSign's Online Fraud Barometer shows that one in 10 Australians who use the Internet have lost an average of $1000 to online theft and fraud in the past 12 months, the company announced yesterday.

With more than 13.7 million Australians using the Internet, the total loss was a $1.286 billion — with $200 million yet to be recovered by victims of online ID fraud.

"The best way for Australians to stay safe online is to make sure they’re always checking for enhanced security when submitting personal information," Jim Drake, General Manager for VeriSign in the Asian Pacific.

The Australians most affected by online fraud are 18-24 -year-olds and South Australian residents. The least vulnerable groups in the country are Australians over the age of 50, Internet users in Queensland and high income earners.
