What features would you like to see in the next-generation iPhone?

By now, you've probably read about the next-generation iPhone prototype drama. US blog Gizmodo obtained what is believed to be Apple's next-generation iPhone, already dubbed the iPhone 4G or iPhone HD.

Expected to be announced at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in June, the next-generation iPhone is believed to include a number of new features including a front-facing video camera, a larger rear-camera with flash, a higher resolution display, a secondary microphone and a glass-style, flat rear casing.

The new iPhone should also be thinner than the current iPhone 3GS and is expected to come with a larger battery, suggesting Apple may have also made improvements to battery life — a sore point with owners of the current iPhone.

With the next-generation iPhone HD announcement just weeks away, we've rounded up some of the coolest features we hope Apple has included.

Better battery life

Our number one gripe with the iPhone is its mediocre battery life. The large display, 3G connectivity and wealth of applications no doubt put a lot of stress on the battery, but the iPhone's poor battery life remains one of its most derided features. Heavy users are often forced to charge it twice a day and even moderate users will be lucky to get a full 24 hours of life from a full charge. We can't wait for a battery that doesn't need to be charged every night and doesn't require us to carry around extra battery pack cases. We dream of the day that we aren't forced to take our charger to the office, or keep an extra charger in the car in fear of our poor iPhone dying before the day ends.

An improved camera

Though cameras on mobile phones aren't meant for any sort of serious photography, it would be nice to be able to take a photo at night with your iPhone. Lacking even a basic flash or light, the iPhone's camera is mediocre at best. We're not expecting performance to rival a $1000 SLR camera, but is being able to take a decent photo in low-light conditions really too much to ask? We'd also like to see a front-mounted camera for video calls as well as a dedicated, physical camera button.

An improved display

The iPhone's display is one of the best touchscreens on the market, but it looks second best when pitted against the HTC Desire, for example. We'd love to see a brighter, clearer and crisper OLED display; it would also be easier to see in direct sunlight than regular LCD screens.

Facebook integration with contacts

The latest Android smartphones, including the HTC Desire have Facebook integration built into their contact lists. This means in addition to storing phone numbers and e-mail addresses, the contacts can include Facebook profile information, such as the latest status updates, birthdays and events. This is a feature found in many new smartphones, so we're hoping to see it in the next-gen iPhone.

Mail improvements

A unified Inbox was one of the features confirmed for iPhone 4.0 OS, allowing users to view messages from multiple e-mail accounts in a single list. However, there are a number of other features missing, including the ability to mark all messages as read, delete multiple e-mails simultaneously and create and edit e-mail folders. If the iPhone wants to be seen as a serious business device, these features are a must in the next-generation model.

What do you think of the impending launch of the next generation iPhone? Are a better quality screen and camera enough to entice you? What features do you think Apple should include? Let us know in the comments section below!
