ACCC seeks to educate mobile phone users

ACCC uses National Law Week to raise awareness of mobile phone scams

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is using National Law Week to highlight the dangers of mobile phone scams.

According to the ACCC, the increased use of mobile phones has meant that consumers are not fully aware of their rights and may be more susceptible to scams. Issues that the ACCC wants to address include the downloading of premium content like ringtones and games. Users are sometimes not fully informed of the charges and conditions attached to premium content.

The ACCC's Regional Outreach Managers will be attending court open days to explain how the ACCC helps consumers and facilitate roleplaying in secondary schools to educate students about warranty and refund rights for mobile phones.

The initiative by the ACCC comes after the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman announced last month that although consumer complaints about mobile premium services were dropping, more education was needed.

National Law Week is an annual Australia-wide event that educates the community about the law, the legal system and the legal profession. It will run until 21 May.

More information can be found on the ACCC's Web site. Further information on scams can be obtained via the SCAMwatch Web site
