Telstra launches Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10

Second Android smartphone on Telstra's network

Telstra has launched a second smartphone powered by Google's Android operating system, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.

Available on May 4, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 follows Telstra's launch of the HTC Desire, which was the telco's first Android handset.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, the handset maker's first Android smartphone, includes Sony Ericsson's Timescape and Mediascape applications. Timescape effectively integrates all online and phone communications like SMS, e-mail and Facebook messages into one menu, while Mediascape stores and plays multimedia files, including music and videos. The XPERIA X10 runs the 1.6 version of Android, but will be upgradeable to the latest 2.1 version in the coming months.

Another selling point of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is an integrated contacts list with social-networking information such as Facebook and Twitter, in addition to regular phone book details. The smartphone is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, the same used in HTC's Desire and Google's Nexus One.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 has a 4-inch capacitive touch screen, an 8.1-megapixel camera, and 1GB of internal memory plus an additional 8GB microSD card.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will be available on Telstra's $110 Ultimate plan with a 150MB of data or the $99 cap plan with no data included. Both are 24 month plans, with the XPERIA X10 also being sold outright for $1099.
