AVG releases free boot utility

Linux-based rescue CD can be downloaded to CD, DVD or USB stick

Security software company AVG has released a free Linux-based boot utility that can be burned to CD or DVD as well as extracted to a USB flash drive.

Called the ‘AVG Rescue CD’, the product integrates AVG Anti-Virus and Internet Security software and is available to all customers, including those using AVG Free, to download. The utility enables users to recover computers that cannot be booted or are infected with a virus so that they cannot be run normally. AVG did not say whether the utility would be continuously updated in order to keep up with the latest viruses and malware threats.

AVG’s Marketing Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Lloyd Borrett, said that the AVG Rescue CD has been used by IT professionals and system administrators for many years.

“The utility used to be sold as a commercial product but now AVG feels like all its customers should have access to this tool,” said Borrett. “It’s fantastic that it’s now freely available for anyone to download and use.”

The utility works by automatically mounting all hard drives of the computer and scanning them for viruses and malware once the computer is rebooted using the disc or a flash drive containing the software. Extra features include a Windows Registry editor, a TestDisk utility for recovering deleted files and lost partitions, a file browser for navigating folders, and a ping tool for basic network diagnostics. The AVG Rescue CD will also automatically restore a safe network connection to the computer. AVG paid customers can also call the local technical support team for full support.

Borrett said that many computer repair centres in Melbourne had used the product for a number of years. “AVG just wants to help people fix problems with their computers,” he said.

If you can afford the price tag, it is well worth the money. It out performs any other laptop I have tried for gaming, and the transportable design and incredible display also make it ideal for work.
