Telstra doubles Next G network's speed to 42Mbps

Developed in conjunction with Ericsson, Qualcomm and Sierra Wireless, Telstra’s new HSPA+ dual carrier technology allows the sending and receiving of two data channels simultaneously

Telstra has upgraded its Next G network to support speeds of up to 42 megabits per second (Mbps) in parts of Australia and has also released a new mobile broadband device to take advantage of the upgrade.

Developed in conjunction with Ericsson, Qualcomm and Sierra Wireless, Telstra’s new HSPA+ dual carrier technology allows the sending and receiving of two data channels simultaneously, providing peak download speeds of 42Mbps. The Next G network was previously capable of 21Mbps speeds.

Set to go on sale in Australia “later this year,” the Sierra Wireless, Telstra branded AirCard 312U USB modem is the first device that will be able to take advantage of the network's new speed.

“The completion of the HSPA+ dual carrier upgrade will mean a better customer experience in areas of high demand,” said Telstra CEO David Thodey. “With HSPA+ Dual Carrier technology we expect to offer speeds that are comparable to the initial speeds we have seen reported from some fledgling 4G LTE networks.”

Thodey also said that while 4G LTE networks “remains on Telstra’s technology roadmap,” its first priority lies with extracting the full potential from HSDPA+ technology.

“We will take full advantage of this by again doubling our peak network speeds to 84Mbps during 2011.”

Telstra says it will provide more detail on which locations will benefit from the faster speeds closer to the launch of the AirCard 312U USB modem.

Pricing for the new AirCard 312U USB modem is yet to be announced.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
