Annual G.I.R.L. scholarship program accepting applications

Sony announces third Gamers In Real Life scholarship program

Sony Online Entertainment is accepting applications for its third annual Gamers In Real Life (G.I.R.L.) scholarship program. One qualified student can score up to $10,000 toward tuition and school costs -- and you don't even have to be a girl.

The last two winners of the scholarship have been women, it's true. However, SOE Manager of Corporate Communications Sara Kaplan confirms that men are welcome to apply and that the program has gotten qualified male applicants in the past.

After all, the goal of G.I.R.L. isn't just to hire women at SOE; it's also about changing the way women are viewed by the video game industry -- both within games and within the industry itself. The scholarship promotes that by requiring applicants to actively think about how they could improve the image of women within games and what they could do to make games more women will play in an essay as part of the application process.

Here's the list of requirements to enter:

To be eligible to participate, entrants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program related to video games, including video game art, design, animation, production, programming or visual effects, must not graduate before the end of the 2011 spring term and must comply with the program's official rules. Entrants are required to complete an online application along with an existing piece of art, and if chosen as semifinalists, submit two pieces of concept art and one essay that will be reviewed by a panel of SOE judges. Online applications must be completed and submitted on or before February 15, 2010. SOE will announce the winner on or about May 20, 2010.

MSI GS75

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
