The Xbox 360 pulled in the most software revenue in 2009 within the UK
Several sources today report strong 2009 sales figures for the United Kingdom games industry. Figures from the Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association and the GfK Chart-Track service both show a decrease in software and product sales across all platforms, but ELSPA director general Mike Rawlinson says 2009 was a good year for gaming.
In total, 74.6 million games and 6.7 million consoles were sold in the UK during 2009. Revenues on software sales dropped from GBP 4.034 billion in 2008 to GBP 3.311 billion while console revenues dropped from GBP 1.422 billion to GBP 1.06 billion.
Rawlinson said in a statement made to UK game industry websites, however, that it was a sign of a mature, strengthening industry.
Another interesting development in the UK market is the growth of Xbox 360 revenues. According to Gamesindustry.biz's analysis of the data the Wii did sell more software units than any other console in 2009 -- but the Xbox 360 surpassed it to become the number one software unit by revenue by bringing in GBP 459 million in 2009 (a four percent increase from 2008).
