Intel processors get brand refresh

Flagship processor family to receive change in branding

Processor manufacturer Intel on Friday announced the change in branding of its flagship processor family, in hopes of allaying confusion among consumers regarding the various brands they offer.

Ricky Banaag, country manager, Intel Philippines, said they have received feedback from consumers and enthusiasts about the confusing branding of their products, hence the change.

“We want to enable end users to have easier time in choosing the right processors suited for their needs,” Banaag clarified.

The change in branding, Banaag explained, would include “modifiers” (in the form of i7, i5, i3, etc.) that would easily tell customers the level of performance and features of the processor they are buying.

The soon-to-be-released Intel Core i5, for example, would have relatively lower specifications than the Intel Core i7—manufactured for high-end users—the company released last November, Banaag said.

This would give users an idea of what type of processors to go for upon purchase, he added.. “The i5, for example, is targeted for mid-level use. If consumers simply want to try out the Core brand, then they can go for the entry-level Intel Core i3, which will be released in 2010,” he explained.

Banaag said the new nomenclature would be carried over to future product releases of Intel. Earlier brands however — such as the Pentium and the Celeron — would not be affected by the refreshed brand but would still get the new badge design.
