VIA Nano Processor Powers Next-Generation Data Center Servers

VIA Nano processor brings power efficiency, advanced 64-bit architecture and virtualization to Dell’s XS11-VX8 ‘Ultra-Light’ server
 • 21 May, 2009 10:38

Taipei, Taiwan, 20 May 2009 - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator of power efficient x86 processor platforms, today announced the adoption of the VIA Nano processor platform in the latest high-density server product from Dell’s Data Center Solutions Division. The XS11-VX8 is an ‘ultra-light’ server designed for hyper-scale data center environments that can take advantage of the unique power and performance efficiency of the VIA Nano processor.

The VIA Nano processor provides the lowest power consumption of any 64-bit processor available today, garnering a unique position in the market as the only truly low-power processor to combine a full 64-bit instruction set with virtualization support. The VIA Nano processor facilitates a new breed of server that will offer data centers an aggressively lower TCO without compromising on management features or enterprise functionality.

“Dell’s choice of the VIA Nano processor for the XS11-VX8 ultra light server allows customers to experience the full feature set of our industry leading power efficient processor,” said Wenchi Chen, President and CEO, VIA Technologies, Inc. “The advanced 64-bit architecture and virtualization capabilities will bring significant benefits to hyperscale data centers”.

“A one-size fits all approach simply does not work for hyper-scale computing customers. The unique architecture of environments like Web hosting render unnecessary many of the system features required by mainstream IT. By working with VIA to design a high density, lower power system, Dell is designing for these customer’s specific needs, driving down costs and improving efficiency.” –Forrest Norrod, vice president and general manager of Dell’s Data Center Solutions division.

The XS11-VX8 server addresses the need in hyperscale environments like Web hosting, Web farms and light load infrastructures for a high density, low power and ‘Ultra-Light’ server product. In these applications general-purpose servers are under-utilized and inefficient, requiring expensive cooling infrastructures and using more energy than the applications require.

The VIA Nano-powered XS11-VX8 is the densest server on the market with 12 systems housed in a 2U chassis. Promising up to 34% lower TCO compared to the use of white box client systems, the XS11-VX8 is designed for single server workloads where overall power consumption needs to be less than 30 watts per system.

About the VIA Nano Processor
Building on the market-leading energy efficiency of the VIA C7 processor family, the new VIA Nano processor uses a 64-bit, out of order, superscalar architecture that has been specifically designed to deliver truly optimized performance for the most demanding floating-point intensive applications.

The excellent computational performance of the VIA Nano processor is coupled with aggressive thermal and power management, naturally resulting in a market leading performance-per-watt ratio. Thus the VIA Nano processor addresses the need for enhanced stability and lower energy consumption in consumer device design.
