HTC Magic delayed until May 5

Last minute hardware change causes delay

HTC has revealed that its Magic handset, which runs on Google's Android platform, won't be available in the UK until May 5.

The new phone, which will be available on Vodafone, follows the T-Mobile G1 - the first ever handset to run Google's OS. That handset was also produced by HTC.

According to the phone manufacturer, the delay is due to "a last minute hardware change".

The new Android smartphone sports a 3.2in touchscreen with 320x480 resolution, a 3.2Mp digital camera and Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G connectivity. The HTC Magic also benefits from a sleeker design compared to the G1, as well as the lack of a Qwerty keypad.

The device is smaller and lighter than the G1 despite having the same size screen, at 113x55mm, compared to the G1's 117.7x55.7mm. The HTC Magic is thinner at 13.65mm versus 17.1mm thick for the G1, likely due to the lack of the keypad. The Magic is also lighter at 118.5g with the battery, compared to 158g for the G1.

Vodafone said the HTC Magic will be free for those signing up to 35-per-month for 18 months or 30-a-month plans that run for two years.
