Sony releases first OLED television

New Sony XEL-1 OLED TV features 11-inch screen and 960x540 resolution

The Sony XEL-1 is the company's first OLED television screen. Priced at &6999, it has an 11-inch panel with a resolution of 960x540 — which may not sound impressive — but Sony claims the XEL-1 has better image quality than any existing television technologies.

With each OLED pixel acting as a light source, the panel has the ability to display true, zero-colour blacks as well as completely white whites. This allows the XEL-1 OLED television to deliver a contrast ratio of 1000000:1 — Sony claims that this is the highest measurement able to be made.

Thanks to the new television screen technology the XEL-1 OLED television has a very thin form factor, measuring only 3mm thick at its thinnest point. A single side arm connects the XEL-1 television to its base, which houses connectors and a stereo speaker setup.

In addition OLED technology also ensures that the Sony XEL-1 OLED television has a high maximum brightness level — uniform in all sections of the screen — as well as almost instant refresh rates and near-perfect colour reproduction. Sony’s unique ‘Super Top Emission’ OLED circuit design allows natural colours to be easily achieved through the use of colour filters.

Available from mid-April onwards, the 11-inch OLED XEL-1 television has 2 HDMI ports as well as a USB 2.0 port for media playback. Sony’s Xross Media Bar user interface — seen before on the Sony Playstation 3 — makes navigation logical and easy between the built in digital TV tuner and external inputs.

The Sony XEL-1 OLED television will cost $6999 and will initially only be available from Sony Centre stores.
