Saving the Internets

The backlash against the Federal Government's plan to censor has been unprecedented.

Since Senator Conroy's announcement that the government plans to filter content deemed "inappropriate", public outrage has reared its head, thick and fast.

And so it should. Censoring the Internet is simply unbelievable in this day and age. It's limiting freedom and if it becomes reality will cripple already pathetic broadband speeds in Australia.

According to, the proposed filter will make the internet up to 87 per cent slower, more expensive, accidentally block up to one in 12 legitimate sites, will miss the vast majority of inappropriate content and is very easily sidestepped.

Combined with already poor service and speeds, the filter is simply a recipe for disaster.

A number of rallies and campaigns have already been organised, to protest against the proposed Internet filter. Once such campaign is Save the Net. The campaign currently has over 86,000 members, and is targeting 95,000.

A simple petition has been organised by to be presented to Senator Conroy. It’s the start of what will be a long fight — after all, unless there is a huge backlash, the government will claim a victory for the filter.

There are also plans for large protests this Saturday, 13 December, around the country. The Sydney protest will be held at Town Hall Square in George Street, from 11am to 3pm. Similar protests will be held in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Perth and Canberra, all on the same day.

It will be interesting to see the government's reaction.

I need power and lots of it. As a Front End Web developer anything less just won’t cut it which is why the MSI GT75 is an outstanding laptop for me. It’s a sleek and futuristic looking, high quality, beast that has a touch of sci-fi flare about it.
