Christmas Gift Guide: Games

The hottest games this Christmas.

Lots of new games are out this Christmas — there's something to suit all tastes. For the RTS fan, the latest blockbuster title to hit shelves is EA Games’ Red Alert 3. If you’re more into the FPS side of things check out Far Cry 2 and Call of Duty: World at War, while RPG fans can sink their teeth into Fallout 3. Console gamers will be happy with Mirror’s Edge and Resistance 2 now available for PS3, while the Xbox 360 gets polished ports of most PC games.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

Platform: PC

Red Alert 3 is the newest game in the long and illustrious Command and Conquer series, following on from Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath. It’ll be a great gift for newcomers, as well as those familiar with the franchise — and it’s a bit of a history lesson as well, albeit one involving a time-traveling Albert Einstein.

What’s Hot: The new Empire of Japan faction is a good addition to the game, continues to have a great tone, single-player campaigns offer quite a bit of gameplay.

Call of Duty: World at War

Platform: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Another franchise game, Call of Duty: World at War is a return to the World War II roots of the Call of Duty series (after the spectacular Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare). It’s a great game for showing off a new computer’s graphical prowess or just for sitting back and having some old-fashioned first-person shooter fun. It has both single-player and multiplayer modes, so it’ll suit most gamers.

What’s Hot: Intense action, cinematic production values, a great multiplayer component.

Far Cry 2

Platform: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Unlike our earlier picks, Far Cry 2 is only very loosely based on its 2005 predecessor. The action is now in an unnamed African state, with the player completing missions for payment in rough diamonds. This is a gritty, well-made game that serious gamers will appreciate. Be warned, though — it can get quite graphically violent at times.

What’s Hot: A massive open-world that's rich with opportunities and experiences and makes the average shooter look, well, average.

Fallout 3

Platform: Xbox 360, PC

For a world that’s incredibly rich in detail yet almost devoid of human life, pick up a copy of the post-apocalyptic masterpiece Fallout 3. It’s a world where you can do anything and reap the consequences, however far reaching they may be — and we’re talking blowing up a whole city.

What’s Hot: Deep character development options, huge open world with lots of quests, satisfying combat, dangerously addictive.

Mirror's Edge

Platform: PC

If you’re sick of shooting, blasting and driving, maybe you can relax with some running? Mirror’s Edge is a futuristic game based around parkour free-running that pits the player against aggressive enemies as well as a beautiful yet dangerous environment of city roof-tops and urban spaces.

What’s Hot: A unique and refreshing gaming experience, free-running game-play is amazing, graphics are awesome.

Resistance 2

Platform: PS3

The original Resistance was a launch title for the PS3 in Australia. Resistance 2 builds on the original's laudable quality, with a variety of gameplay modes to keep players of all ages and walks of life engrossed. If you’re a fan of online play you’ll love duking it out against 60 other players online simultaneously.

What’s Hot: Enjoyable online play, plenty of unlockable equipment, tight controls, intoxicatingly powerful weapons

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

A smarter way to print for busy small business owners, combining speedy printing with scanning and copying, making it easier to produce high quality documents and images at a touch of a button.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
