Mac OS X 10.6 expected next week

According to reports, Apple will release a beta version of Mac OS X 10.6 at next week at Apple's World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco.

Apple's Leopard may be changing its spots — and soon. According to reports, Apple will release a beta version of Mac OS X 10.6 at next week at Apple's World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco. Reports from The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) claim Apple will release OS X 10.6 (Leopard) next week. It reports the update is not dramatic in regards to new features, but adds updates will center "strictly on stability and security."

TUAW added a public version of the update will be available in January 2009 to coincide with the annual MacWorld Expo. The most recent Mac OS X is 10.5.3.

This adds to a previous report that the new OS build will show up very soon. MacRumors is reporting it found references to Mac OS 10.6 in iPhone Software Development Kit, which suggested to it that the OS will soon surface.

End of the line for PowerPC?

TUAW theorises the Mac OS X 10.6 update signals Apple's lack of support for its PowerPC, leaving Apple to emphasise its Intel-only Mac OS X computers.

Of course we've heard this type of WWDC buzz before. Still unconfirmed, the loudest clamour for anticipated Steve Jobs announcements is the debut of a 3G iPhone.
