Microsoft backpedals on 'winning' the console war

Still 'too early' to call

A week after Microsoft suggested that Xbox 360 would "win" the console war, having just barely reached 10 million U.S. sales before either Wii or PS3, Microsoft's Shane Kim said it's still "too early" to call.

According to a Wired News article published on Tuesday, Kim said a winner can't be called until "somebody's well on their way to reaching 100 million units."

He went on to say, "This is only the third year of our existence and only the second year of Sony and Nintendo's existence. Are we just amusing ourselves by trying to declare a winner and loser while the customers are still out there deciding?"

But amuse Microsoft did in an official press release disseminated last week, in which Xbox vice president Don Mattrick said: "History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in [US] console sales wins the generation battle."

As of April 30, Microsoft has sold over 10 million Xbox 360s in America, compared to more than 9.5 million Nintendo Wiis, the latter of which launched a full year behind the Xbox 360.

In the same Wired News interview, Kim, the head of Microsoft Game Studios, further denied comment on the rumoured Xbox 360 motion controller. "We don't comment on rumours or speculation," he said, before adding, "we're going to continue to push innovation in a whole bunch of different places. Whether that's in motion-sensing or some other area, we'll see."
