Adaptec Expands Controller Family with New Two Port External SATA Solution for the PCI Express Interface

 • 10 September, 2007 11:06

Compatible with eSATA Disk Drives and Tape Drives, Adaptec 1225SA Ensures High Performance External Storage Connectivity, Ease of Use, Maximum Flexibility, and Improved Data Protection

Sydney, Australia – September 10, 2007 - Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader in storage solutions, today announced the availability of a new two port controller designed to ensure high performance external storage connectivity of PCI Express (PCIe) equipped, Windows, and Linux computers. The latest addition to Adaptec's family of industry leading RAID controllers, the Adaptec 1225SA provides a wide range of superior features designed specifically for small office and home office (SOHO) networks relying on external direct attached storage (DAS) for professional workstations and entry servers.

Fully tested to ensure compatibility with majority third-party systems and devices, as well as all external SATA (eSATA) disk drives and tape drives on the market today, the new Adaptec 1225SA RAID controller installs in any available PCIe slot, and offers two external SATA ports with speeds up to 3 gigabits per second. The card is equipped with the intuitive Adaptec Storage Manager(TM) (ASM) software for ease of use and improved management, and offers RAID levels 0, 1, JBOD and eSATA hot-swap compatibility, enabling users to easily move drives or volumes from one system to another, delivering maximum flexibility and superior data protection.

"Use of eSATA by the computing and consumer electronics industries is increasing with the expectation that its superior performance will drive it to be a future standard for high-performance computing," said Cathy Scott, vice president of marketing for Branded Products for WD. "WD offers an external hard drive solution with USB 2.0 and eSATA interfaces so that consumers' digital content today also will be accessible using tomorrow's super-fast computers. By offering an eSATA product, Adaptec is helping consumers enjoy the fastest transfer rates -- today and tomorrow."

Serial ATA (SATA) was designed as an internal interface technology, offering improved performance and new features for disk and tape drives inside the PC system. Now, the same performance and features are available for storage needs outside the PC, without relying on USB or 1394 connectivity, via eSATA technology. Emerging applications for eSATA external storage include new SATA features such as a port multiplier support, which allows a single host connection to access multiple disk drives, providing an easy method for adding terabytes of storage capacity to a host system with an external SATA connection. The Adaptec 1225SA allows this capacity to be shared by multiple users, partitioned into different configurations and leveraged to provide automatic backups of other devices on the network.

"Initially supporting the consumer market, eSATA is rapidly finding its way into commercial and professional applications for workstations and entry level servers in which speed, reliability and security are of critical importance," said Suresh Panikar, director of marketing for the Data Protection Solutions Group at Adaptec. "We specifically designed the Adaptec 1225SA to exceed those requirements by delivering maximum data throughput of 3Gb/s per port, while utilising the latest eSATA connector to ensure a more secure cable connection and providing improved durability, as well as increased EMI protection, and up to 2 metres cable length."

The Adaptec 1225SA enables users to easily move drives or volumes from one system to another, providing maximum flexibility and data protection via HostRAID(TM), an integrated RAID technology that can be easily configured as two individual ports with no RAID (JBOD), with RAID 0 (striping), or with RAID 1 (mirroring), and eSATA hot-swap compatibility.

Adaptec has been delivering storage and I/O solutions for over 25 years, and leveraging the industry's most comprehensive compatibility test lab, Adaptec has ensured that the Adaptec 1225SA RAID controller is compatible and fully supported by the majority of third-party systems and devices, including major external SATA (eSATA) disk drives and tape drives, on the market today. In addition, the Adaptec 1225SA is equipped with the intuitive Adaptec Storage Manager(TM) (ASM) software to centralise management and improve productivity. ASM enables remote RAID management, monitoring, and configuration through secure, encrypted communication. Pop-up tips and online help simplify RAID array creation and management.

Pricing and Availability

The new Adaptec 1225SA, 2 port eSATA, PCIe x1 RAID controller is shipping and available through worldwide distributors and resellers now. Pricing for the 1225SA is $A99.00 including GST. For more information, please visit or call +61 2 9503 1555.
