Adaptec Launches New, Extremely High Performance Network Storage Platform Optimised for Intensive Data Protection Applications

 • 29 January, 2007 14:11

Built on AMD OpteronTM Processors, The New Snap Server 650 Leads Adaptec’s Storage Product Line for Small and Medium Distributed Business

Sydney, Australia – January 29, 2007 – Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader in storage solutions, today announced that it has broken through the performance barrier for network storage with its latest Snap Server 650 that is optimised for extremely demanding data protection applications such as video surveillance, email database archive, performance-sensitive disk-based backup and long distance disaster recovery.

“With the same legendary ease-of-use and twice the performance of any other Snap Server, the 650 can compete with many enterprise-class storage systems at a fraction of the cost and maintenance requirements,” said Demetri Christodoulou, Regional Manager for ANZ and South Asia for Adaptec.

The new Snap Server 650 leads the recently refreshed Snap Server by Adaptec product line ranging from an entry level 160GB model up to the scaleable Snap Server 650 with 64.2TB. Price for the 650 starts at A$28,396.00 including GST for the base 1.2TB model, with throughput speeds to 1045 Mb/s, up to twice as fast as competing products at a similar price point.

Based on the same award-winning GuardianOS™ operating system now standard throughout the Snap Server product line, the Snap Server 650 also offers a full suite of integrated data protection solutions including antivirus, backup and recovery, and data replication. Built on the AMD Opteron architecture, the Snap Server 650 provides a base capacity of 1.2TB with Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives (15k RPM) and available memory that is scalable from 2GB to 4GB for extremely fast throughput for performance-intensive application and data protection environments.

For added protection the 650 features dual 2Gbit Ethernet interfaces with failover and balancing as well as dual hot swappable power supplies and cooling, and Ultra 160 SCSI port for tape drive support, all packaged in a small 1U frame.

“A one-size-fits-all approach is simply unacceptable for small and mid-size enterprises that have the same complex requirements for data protection as the largest companies, yet with much fewer financial and IT resources,” said Steve Terlizzi, general manager and vice president, Storage Solutions Group, Adaptec, Inc. “Businesses shouldn’t have to compromise on performance or data protection functionality in order to get what they need. That’s why we remain committed to delivering the industry’s best mid-range storage solutions through the Snap Server brand – solutions that continue to raise the bar for performance, easy-to-use data protection and affordability. The Snap Server 650 is the latest example of our continued commitment to this market.”

Pricing and Availability

The Snap Server 650 is currently available in Australia through distribution partners. Pricing for the Snap Server 650 (1.2TB SAS) starts at A$28,396.00 RRP including GST. Expansion for the Snap Server 650 is available through the SANbloc S50 JBOD, which starts at A$8,023 RRP including GST. Adaptec’s suite of data protection software is fully integrated with all Snap Servers - some applications are standard offerings and some are available as optional features for additional purchase.
