Fortinet Unifies LAN and WAN Security with FortiGate-224B
- 07 February, 2007 16:10

Fortinet – the pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today announced the Australian availability of the FortiGate-224B™.

The FortiGate-224B is a new class of high-performance LAN security device that enforces security policies at the point of network access, preventing intrusion attempts, viruses, worms, denial-of-service attacks, and blended threats at wire speed.

Charles Cote, Country Manager for Fortinet Australia, commented “The FortiGate-224B combines eight enterprise-grade security functions in a high performance network appliance, as well as providing Fast Ethernet ports to directly connect your computers, laptops, and servers.”

Charles Cote continued “It is much easier to manage your IT systems effectively when you embed enterprise security services, such as anti-virus and intrusion prevention, into your network switch infrastructure. The FortiGate-224B makes it easier for Australia businesses to automatically protect every device in their LAN and WAN – without needing to load software onto every computer.”

The FortiGate-224B features 4.4 Gbps layer 2 switch performance, 150 Mbps firewall throughput, 24 x 10/100 switch ports, two 10/10/1000 switch ports and two 10/100 WAN ports.
Network security policies can be enforced without requiring special end-user software agents. In addition, this new switch integrates comprehensive network and content protection through the integration of eight essential security applications and services - including antivirus, firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention (IPS), anti-spam, anti-spyware, Web filtering and traffic shaping.

Laptops, PDAs, and other mobile devices frequently used outside the corporate network over untrusted connections can create security vulnerabilities. Within corporate networks, these devices are typically treated as trusted assets, and given unrestricted network access. At this point, security threats acquired while the device is outside can bypass perimeter defenses, and make their way into the trusted network.

Customers can configure the FortiGate 224B to operate in a “strict” mode where all ports are initially managed in an un-trusted quarantine state, or in a “dynamic” mode in which all ports initially operate in a trusted network state. The strict mode redirects access attempts to a web portal where administrator-defined security checks are performed. Utilising dynamic mode ports allows network access based on pre-established policies, until a threat or policy violation is detected. If a violation is detected, the port is reassigned and all traffic is restricted to a quarantined VLAN until the violation is remediated.

The FortiGate-224B is kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiGuard™ subscription services, which provide continuous updates to help protect against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans, and other threats - around the clock, and around the world.

The FortiGate-224B is available now through Fortinet’s network of Australian partners, starting from a suggested Australian list price of $5,940 inc GST .
Fortinet products are distributed in Australia by Firewall Systems, Lan 1, and WhiteGold Solutions.
