Wyse Announces Enterprise Desktop Virtualisation Solution Optimised for VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

 • 19 October, 2006 14:31

New software-based product is company’s thinnest device to deliver the benefits of Desktop Virtualisation

Sydney, Australia – October 19, 2006 - Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, today announced a thin desktop device optimised for VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), based on Wyse’s thin client OS technology. Wyse and VMware collaborated to make Wyse Thin OS – VDI Edition aware of key VDI-oriented technologies, enhancing the experience of IT, and users deploying this innovative architecture.

VMware’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure enables businesses and institutions to manage their desktops from the data centre by placing a user’s desktop environment in a virtual machine, hosted on an industry standard server, and accessed by a thin client on the user desktop. VDI simplifies and centralises the execution of applications in the data centre, reducing the costs and complexity associated with using PCs to deliver applications. Benefits include:

 Consolidates and centralises complete desktop environments within the data centre

 Virtualises, optimises, and manages server resources to host and deliver secure, isolated desktops that are always-on and accessible from anywhere

 Improves security and compliance by centralising sensitive enterprise data in the data centre within isolated virtual machines

 Built on VMware’s market-leading VMware Infrastructure and leverages the significant benefits of desktop virtualisation

 Reduces physical maintenance on the desktop

 Desktops can be remotely managed

"VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure delivers value to our customers through improved security and manageability. Since the announcement of the VDI Alliance in April, we have been collaborating with several partners to deliver virtual desktop offerings to the enterprise," said Jerry Chen, director of enterprise desktop platforms and solutions, VMware. "We are excited to work with Wyse within the VDI Alliance and our Community Source programs to deliver their first VDI optimised product offering which will enable our customers to quickly adopt and deploy VDI within their environments."

The new Wyse solution is expressly designed for the VDI architecture. It incorporates:

 The New Wyse Thin OS - VDI Edition, which eliminates the user complexity around deploying the Virtual Desktop architectures, enables single pushbutton “power on to work” for virtualised environments and is integrated with popular connection broker technologies, and

 Wyse’s popular S Class thin client device

Wyse is also a participant in the VMware Community Source program, an innovative collaborative development effort that provides open technology access to the source code and APIs for VMware ESX Server. The program combines the best elements of open source and enterprise development allowing partners to boost the level of functionality and slash the time to market of virtualisation solutions for their customers.

"Wyse is very excited that our work with VMware has already resulted in a VDI-enabled thin desktop operating system -- a tremendous new offering for our enterprise customers," said Ricardo Antuna, vice president of business line management, Wyse Technology. "In the future, by working through VMware’s Community Source program, we will incorporate into the VDI architecture innovative features, such as multi-media, USB peripheral support and new thin client devices."

Wyse and VMware will be embarking on a series of seminars to promote this exciting new solution, see www.wyse.com.au for the ANZ timetable. Wyse plans to begin shipping the new OS and device solution this quarter.
