Wyse Research Supports Gartner Claim on PC Energy Wastage

Wyse to Preview a Range of Energy Saving Thin Computing Devices at GARTNER SYMPOSIUM/ITxpo in Sydney

GARTNER SYMPOSIUM/ITxpo, SYDNEY 14 November 2006 – Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, today released details of their green computing research which supports the Gartner claim that Australian IT users need to rein in energy costs. Wyse research shows organisations can cut desktop energy costs tenfold by deploying thin-computing architectures. While the average traditional desktop guzzles over 80 watts of electricity, Wyse thin clients use about 7 watts -- or 8 watts with overhead from the central server.

The result is significant cost savings for a customer, which further lowers the total cost of ownership (TCO) for thin computing architectures. Many companies and countries around the world are recognising the importance of energy savings at the workplace.

According to a press release from Gartner in Australia, “Organisations are under mounting pressure to develop ‘greener’ approaches towards their information technology (IT) practices, and as an ‘environmentally conscious’ country, IT and business leaders in Australia need to wake up to the issues of spiralling energy consumption and environmental legislation.”

Distinguished analyst and chief of research at Gartner, Steve Prentice, who will be in Sydney in November as keynote presenter at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2006, says ‘green’ is an issue that is rapidly rising up the CEO’s agenda and one that Gartner will be paying increasing attention to over the coming year.

“IT's ‘age of innocence’ is nearing an end,” said Mr Prentice. “Technology's clean and friendly ‘weightless economy’ image is being challenged by its growing environmental footprint. While a growing number of regulations are already increasing the end-of-life costs for IT equipment, IT also has to face mounting concerns over increasing electrical power consumption.”

"Traditional PCs pump electricity into idle processors, spinning hard drives and local cooling systems -- a tremendous waste of resources," said Rick Ferguson, vice president of operations for Asia-Pacific, Wyse Technology. "By contrast, thin clients contain no moving parts and use little electricity, adding low energy costs to the list of reasons why the TCO of a thin client is 40 percent less than a PC."

Wyse will be showcasing or discussing the latest range of their energy efficient thin client devices at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo including several new to the Australian market. They include: The G-Class the worlds most powerful Thin Computer with powerful graphics using Windows XP Embedded, the industry-first family of Wi-Fi enabled thin clients, and a thin desktop device optimised for VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure which places a users desktop environment in a virtual host.

About Wyse Technology
