At IFA 2006 in Berlin, Philips showed off the latest incarnation of their Lumalive fabric technology. Lumalive integrates light emitting diodes (LED) into fabrics which can then be used in a wide range of applications. On show at IFA were clothing and furniture applications, each programmed to render simple graphics or company logos.
I can't imagine how this technology can be used for anything other than advertising but I still think it is cool nonetheless. My mind races with imagery of BladeRunner or Minority Report inspired futures where everyone has graphics racing across their clothing as they walk down the street. Little kids and adults alike will be walking billboards and as a society we will be one step closer to finally creating those self-drying and self-fitting jackets from Back to the Future II. Once we achieve those, the sky is the limit as flying cars and rocket packs will, obviously, be just around the corner.
