Reliability and security the focuses in three new business notebooks

Sydney, 5 September 2006 – In a bid to raise the industry benchmark in notebook reliability, Toshiba (Australia) Pty. Limited Information Systems Division (ISD) today introduced three new business notebooks with its comprehensive suite of EasyGuard technology.

Toshiba EasyGuard, launched in 2005, provides enhanced security, system protection and connectivity through proprietary design features including a patented, three-dimensional HDD accelerometer and shock absorbent casing, a spill resistant keyboard and improved casework design. An 18 month evaluation by Toshiba indicates that EasyGuard features improve notebook reliability by up to three times over previous models.

Tecra A8: Ruggedised 15.4 inch desktop-replacement
Joining the Tecra M and S series, the Tecra A8 is the latest edition to the Toshiba business range of ruggedised notebooks. The 15.4 inch widescreen desktop-replacement model includes several new EasyGuard features to increase protection of the motherboard, HDD and keyboard, including:

Motherboard and HDD protection

- A thicker HDD casing, which improves strength and resilience one and a half times;
- The centering of the motherboard in the chassis to protect system components in the case of shock.

Chassis protection

- 50 per cent fewer screws for improved serviceability;
- Chip components placed as far as possible from screws to minimise warming and circuit board vibration;
- Chip implementation: The BGA chip on the system board is fixed so as to resist shock and vibration.

Keyboard protection

- Anti-bounce keyboard resulting in 44 per cent less bending and vibration.

Screen protection

- Advance hinging design that is three times stronger to support the new widescreen monitor;
- Display casing are two and a half times stronger;
- Display edges are protected by a metal plate and shock absorbent material.

HALT testing:
The Tecra A8 was subject to an intensive testing process, codenamed HALT (highly accelerated life testing), to simulate heavy notebook usage. Notebooks are tested to ascertain their resistance to extreme temperatures
(-25C to +70C), shock and repetitive vibration.

The Tecra A8 is available with either an Intel Core Solo T1400 or Core Duo T2400 processor. It also comes with 512MB RAM, up to 80 gigabyte (GB) hard drive and Intel 945GM Express chipset for high quality video and graphics.

Portégé M500 – Ultra-portable 12 inch widescreen notebook
The Portégé M500 is a 12 inch widescreen notebook with an in-built DVD SuperMulti drive. It is designed for small business owners and mobile workers who require high-end functionality and performance in a lightweight and ruggedised design.

As is standard across Toshiba’s Portégé and Tecra range, the Portégé M500 includes the following EasyGuard features:
- Ruggedisation of HDD, screen, and casework;
- Toshiba’s three-dimensional drop-detection sensor, which disengages the hard disk drive when the notebook is dropped or bumped
- Trusted Platform Module (TPM ) for hardware encryption;
- Biometric fingerprint reader with separate user (system) and supervisor (HDD) passwords; and
- Spill resistant keyboard.

It includes an Intel Core Duo Processor T300 (1.66GHz), 60 gigabyte (GB) hard disk drive and 512MB RAM. With an extended battery life, Portégé M500 owners can play movies continually for up to six hours.

Tecra M7 – Widescreen 14 inch tablet PC
Designed to meet a need for advanced graphics in the architectural and design industries, the Tecra M7 tablet PC includes the new NVIDIA Quadro graphics chipset and 128 MB of external DDR2 video memory to be able to support multiple multimedia functions. It has a 14.1 inch WXGA+ screen one of the largest and highest resolution screens available on a tablet PC.

With Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, the Tecra M7 offers digital inking, speech and handwriting recognition capabilities. It also comes with Toshiba ConfigFree software for easy connectivity and optional docking capabilities for added convenience.

As well as the EasyGuard features mentioned on the Portégé M500, the Tecra M7 features signature authentication for additional security. The Tecra M7 also includes an additional slice battery that extends the battery life up to a full working day.

“By their mobile nature, notebooks are subject to greater amounts of stress than their desktop equivalents,” said Justin White, product marketing manager, Toshiba ISD. “By looking for these sorts of features, users can still achieve the greater productivity and flexibility associated with mobile working whilst protecting themselves against data loss and downtime.”

Toshiba EasyGuard Replacement Guarantee:
To underpin its confidence in the reliability of the products, Toshiba is providing an EasyGuard Replacement Guarantee for all Tecra M, S and Portégé models purchased between 21 July 2006 and 31 October 2006. Under this guarantee, Toshiba will automatically replace any notebook if a main component fails within warrantee. This is in addition to standard warranties available on all notebooks.
