Via launches 1.5GHz processor that doesn't need a fan

Via launched two new microprocessors, a 1.5GHz and a 1GHz chip, that are built for small computing systems because they don't need active cooling from a fan.

Taiwanese chip developer Via Technologies has announced two new microprocessors, a 1.5GHz and a 1GHz chip, that are built for small computing systems because they don't need active cooling from a fan.

The new line of x86 processors, part of the company's Eden chip family, are designed to run at the lowest voltage possible to reduce battery drain on devices. The 1GHz Via Eden ULV (ultra-low voltage) processor runs at just 3.5 watts, compared to 7.5 watts for the more powerful 1.5GHz chip, Via said in a statement.

The new line of chips also come with the company's own Via V4-Bus, a part vital to transfer data to and from the microprocessor to other components inside a computer. The company used to build Intel compatible buses with a technology license from the chip giant, but last year made the transition to its own front-side bus.

The Eden line of processors are designed to be used in devices such as thin clients, silent desktops and set top boxes, Via said. The chips are already shipping, but the company did not disclose pricing information.
