In Pictures: The hidden fangs of Windows 8.1 - and how to avoid them

Before you install Windows 8.1, make sure you understand the gotchas and how not to get bit

Bring back the Windows Experience Index Problem: The Windows Experience Index is a handy tool for comparing machines side-by-side, and taken with copious quantities of salt, it gives a naïve assessment of relative performance. I would never take the WEI as gospel, but it’s easy to fire up WEI when you’re looking at a dozen different machines and want to know if there are any real winners or losers in the bunch.

Microsoft killed the WEI in Windows 8.1, although it’s alive and well in Windows 8. “Killed” is a bit of a misnomer. In fact, Windows still runs the WinSAT assessment tools under the covers. It just doesn’t display the results of the WinSAT runs.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
