Cordova

Giving Apache prominence in mobile computing, Cordova features APIs for application developers to access native capabilities like cameras via JavaScript. Cordova can be used with a UI framework like jQuery or Sencha Touch and works on iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone, among others.

The project originated as PhoneGap and was developed by Nitobi, which was acquired by Adobe, says Brian Leroux, Cordova vice president at Apache and an Adobe product manager. Source code was donated to Apache.

“Apache Cordova is the open source project that we use to build apps in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and PhoneGap is a distribution,” Leroux says. Apache is aiming to release Cordova 3.0 this July, offering a modular approach to using the software.
