Smartphones are all the rage in the mobile market and touchscreen smartphones have made the biggest impact. Apple's iPhone 3GS has hogged much of the limelight in this space, but Google's Android operating system has made a huge splash. Providing a number of benefits over Apple including an open applications market, a unique and fully customisable user interface and full multitasking, Android continues to go from strength to strength with brands like HTC, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Motorola already launching handset in Australia, and the likes of LG soon to follow. For those who want an iPhone alternative, we've rounded up the best Android smartphones currently available.

HTC Desire

HTC's Desire is the first Android phone to be released by Telstra, and we think it's the best Android phone so far. A highly impressive design, a superb, customisable user interface and all the features and capabilities of the latest version of Android combine to produce an excellent smartphone that will only get better with software updates. The HTC Desire boasts an outstanding 3.7in AMOLED display, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and an updated version of HTC's excellent Sense user interface.
