Sony VAIO VGN-NW17GJ notebook

Price: $1299

As back to school notebook specials ramp up, an unlikely brand is looking like a good contender for your money; namely, Sony. The Sony VAIO VGN-NW17GJ is a 15.5in, Intel Core 2 Duo–based laptop that looks good and is much more comfortable to use -- and much more powerful -- than a measly netbook. With this notebook you'll be able to run pretty much any document creation program you want; you'll be able to edit images comfortably; and you'll have enough grunt to edit videos and upload them to YouTube. Best of all, because the Sony VAIO VGN-NW17GJ is a large notebook, you'll get some much needed exercise while carrying it from class to class. In September we reviewed the Sony VAIO VGN-NW15G, which is a similar model to the VGN-NW17GJ, and we gave it an Editor's Choice award. This notebook looks to be just as good, and Harvey Norman has it for $1299.
