If you're on the lookout for a cheap Blu-ray drive to watch high-def movies on, the Lite-on 4x BD-ROM (DH-4O1S) is one of the best options on the market. However, the lack of burning options — even for CDs — is sure to grate with some.

The new-and-improved LaCie d2 offers faster burning times than its predecessor at a less prohibitive price. However, it is still average and overpriced when compared to certain competitors.

The BWU200S isn't the fastest Blu-ray burner on the market and lacks some of the features found on competitively priced rivals. Nevertheless, it should still satisfy high-def enthusiasts who require an all-in-one burning solution.

Despite doing exactly what it says on the box, the Sony BDUX10S is a hard product to recommend. With zero burning options, it's hard to imagine who this drive will appeal to.

It looks great, and it supports virtually every optical media format that's present on the market today. While it's capable of playing Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs, as well as writing Blu-ray discs, it doesn't compromise on DVD and CD write speeds.

Those of you looking for a new DVD burner with Blu-ray playback will be pleased with this drive. It exceeded our expectations in many of our tests and it was a fairly inconspicuous operator. We just wish it had a faster-rated speed for burning double-layer DVDs.

While adopting the Blu-ray standard is an expensive undertaking, this drive is a step in the right direction, which serves its intended purpose well. For users who want to create their own Blu-ray content, this drive is ideal. It can perform all the functions of a regular DVD burner, in addition to burning Blu-ray discs at relatively quick rate.

If you're already shooting high definition video and want a relatively easy solution with which to create Blu-ray discs for personal or business use, then the d2 can be considered. For the rest of us, it's a very expensive drive and backing up data to Blu-ray discs still takes a long time and plenty of cash.

Provided you have the right setup, the Pioneer will make a good job of Blu-ray movie playback. But even given the significant savings over buying a Blu-ray writer, this is still an expensive proposition.
