The Canon CanoScan LiDE 200's main limitations are that it scans only reflective items (no film scans) and it can't do much in the way of OCR. We were able to create searchable PDFs and plain-text (.txt) files from various documents, but we couldn't save multicolumn layouts (including tables and graphics) in RTF, Microsoft Excel, or any other editable file formats. If you don't need to scan film or perform a lot of OCR, the portable Canon CanoScan LiDE 200 is a compact and energy-efficient scanner.

The HP ScanJet N6310 is versatile, and majors on document conversion, although it does take its time. For slides and negatives, and the flatbed facilities, it will suffice — but for the price, we feel it lacks performance and quality in a few key areas.

The V200's great price, performance, and image quality should put it on the short list of anyone who is searching for a proficient general-purpose scanner.

Kodak should have bundled more software than only ReadIris Pro, and we reckon the price is a little high, but the i40 is a good, solid performer that won’t let you down. Judging by the build quality, it will last for years and years.

We've been talking about the ScanJet 4850 as a high-end scanner, but the truth is that its price tag really isn't that high. For a model with this many features and this level of construction, it really is a steal.

The Canon CanoScan LiDE 25 is very inexpensive, but its compromises in speed, quality, and features make it hard to recommend

The Epson Perfection 4490 is a powerful scanner with versatile image-enhancing features, but its premium price makes it best suited for serious photographers and other detail-conscious users.

Although the HP Scanjet 4890 Photo Scanner satisfies the need for speed - especially with transparency scanning - its features and default image quality could be better.
