In our brief hands-on test of Canon's EOS 550D the camera performed very well. Images came out clear and vibrant and they were huge thanks to the 18-megapixel sensor. We like the video mode, which includes a close cropping function that lets you get very intimate with a distant subject, and footage was quite smooth even when taking action shots. We can't wait to get our hands on it for an in-depth review.

The Samsung NX10 is an interchangeable-lens model that's slightly less bulky than a DSLR, offering a 14.6-megapixel APS-C-size CMOS sensor that's significantly larger than the sensors found in Micro Four-Thirds system cameras from Panasonic and Olympus.

The Canon EOS 7D is definitely for the action photographer: It has a fast burst mode and captures huge images. Its high ISO performance is very good, but we found its focus to be hit and miss.

Overall, despite the Pentax K2000's stellar image quality and what the company has done to make this model appealing and easy to use, it is difficult to recommend the K2000 wholeheartedly due to its focusing shortcomings.

Panasonic's LUMIX DMC-GF1-K is a solidly built compact camera that lets you use different lenses. It's capable of capturing beautifully clear images and it's fast. It does have some issues when focusing in dim lighting, and noise is noticeable at high ISO speeds.

The Sony Alpha A380 delivers evenly exposed images with natural colours when left on its default settings. There are further pre-optimised Creative Style settings for those who prefer the more vivid look. We weren't convinced, however, that the supplied kit lens made the best of the sensor's high pixel count, with detail softer than we expected. Couple this with disappointment about the plastic build and lack of video and Sony gets a 'good, but could do better' this time around.

We can't wait to get Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GF1 digital SLR camera back in our lab for some more in-depth tests. But our initial impressions are good, and this model could be the one to cement the reputation of the fledgling Micro Four-Thirds system.

RRP: $1149.00
Seeing as the Sony Alpha a330 contains a nearly identical feature set and the same imaging chip as its predecessor, this camera is not worth an upgrade, nor is it hearty enough to take on the latest models from Nikon and Canon. But for consumers new to DSLRs and looking for a camera with advanced features that's easy to tote around, the inexpensive Sony a330 meets its mark. It's very simple to handle - and it offers the added benefit of Live View.

RRP: $799.00
The Nikon D3000 isn't designed to 'wow' people, but instead to teach people. It's a digital SLR camera with in-built guides that can help novices select the appropriate shooting mode and settings depending on the style of photo they want to take. It's image quality is good overall, but it's no match for a mid-range D-SLR.

Between the excellent Live View mode, the pop-out LCD screen and the art modes, the Olympus E-620 is a lot of fun to use. We recommend it if you want a compact digital SLR camera that’s not hard to use and which doesn’t compromise on advanced features. It will produce vibrant, clear and well-defined shots.

Canon's EOS 500D is a nice step up from the 400D. It is worth considering this digital SLR if you want the ability to capture high quality video with a still camera.

Nikon's D5000 is an easy-to-use digital SLR. It's not a big camera, so it won't be too hard to carry on outdoor adventures and overseas trips — unless you also pack plenty of lenses and accessories. We recommend it for anyone who wants to make the leap from a compact camera to a digital SLR.

RRP: $4299.00
The Canon EOS 5D Mark II is well suited to photographers who want to crop in to fine details in their photos, or who just want to shoot and print very large landscapes and portraits. We do wish some of its controls were better implemented, but it's not hard to use once you get used to it.

RRP: $1075.00
The entry-level Pentax K-m digital SLR is built to a high standard, with features rivalling more expensive models from competitors. The bundled 18-55mm lens is nothing special, but overall the Pentax K-m is a great SLR for beginners.
Review Date: 27-FEB-2009
RRP: $5299.00
Anyone looking to make the step up to a full-frame D-SLR should make a point of trying out the Sony A900. It's a great camera to use and its performance on location and in the studio was excellent.
