The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FS7 has every feature that a novice user might require and its features work as advertised. It's worth considering this digital camera if you don't want to spend more money on a model with a bigger zoom lens or a higher megapixel count.

If you’re looking for an alternative to the benchmark models of Canon’s IXUS compact camera line-up, the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FS15 is a great choice. It offers a good lens and intelligent picture modes, though it has a smaller screen than we would have liked and lacks high-definition video recording.

The Kodak EasyShare M340 is a cheap and reliable compact digital camera that takes decent photos for the asking price. It may not wow in any one area, but nor does it disappoint. Worth the pennies.

We were pleasantly surprised by the image quality of the Sony DSC-T90 digital camera, with its thin body hiding a competent lens and sensor. It has a few novelty features, like a touch screen and high-definition movie recording, and the design makes it pleasant to use.

The Samsung NV24HD compact digital camera is a good option if you want a model that can capture decent still photos across a range of modes, average video, as well as providing direct access to most manual settings. It employs an innovative menu navigation, which we quickly became accustomed to using. For users who often like to fiddle with the image settings the NV24HD navigation makes this camera a very interesting proposition.

The FujiFilm Finepix F60fd is a decent compact digital camera let down by its high noise levels and unwieldy menu layout. Despite these faults, it remains a reasonable option for beginners thanks to its superb auto modes.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230 is an impressive compact camera that is especially suited to beginners. It takes good photos, comes with an enlarged LCD and has one of the best user interfaces we've seen. All in all, a solid effort.

The Fujifilm Finepix Z30 is a cute compact camera let down by its inflated price tag and terrible user interface. There are plenty of better options on the market, some of which are decidedly cheaper.

Apart from a couple of design quirks, we think the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ7 digital camera is almost the perfect point-and-shoot. It's easy to use, has a wide-angle lens with a huge zoom, produces good colours and clear images, and it can double as a capable video camera. We definitely recommend it.

The Samsung ST50 is a very good looking digital camera and the pictures it takes are clean, but photos are sometimes soft when taken at higher zoom levels, and snaps are under-saturated.

The Canon IXUS 100 IS digital camera is a worthy addition to the IXUS line that impresses on most fronts. Its few flaws are made up for by an arresting form factor and solid image quality. Highly recommended.

The Canon IXUS 990 IS is a great compact camera that combines impressive image quality with an elegant design. However, when it comes to bang for your buck, there are several better deals on the market.

The design of the Canon PowerShot D10 is spot-on for a ruggedised camera. It feels good to use and, most importantly, it’s very easy to use. It takes clear photos but we wish it rendered them with more contrast. Pick it up if you’re after a ruggedised camera for snorkelling, or just to use while you hang around the pool.

There's plenty to like about the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FT1 apart from its rugged build — it takes great still images and good videos, making it a true hybrid. We think Panasonic should ditch the zoom slider and replace it with buttons, and also make the rotational dial a little tougher. But apart from that, we had tons of fun using this camera and you probably will, too.
